Vital Statistics

(304) 526-8631

Maintaining the births, deaths, and marriage records of Cabell County residents is another responsibility of our office.  The original birth and death records are maintained by the State Vital Statistic’s Office, however, copies are distributed to each county clerk to be placed on record within the county offices in order to provide better access to the public.

Although all the indexes for these records are open to the public and can be used for research purposes, West Virginia laws only allow certain family members to obtain an actual certificate of these records, if they are 18 years of age or older.  The list of family members, as outlined under West Virginia law, can be found by clicking pdf here (22 KB)  or using the link on this page.  Once a record reaches a certain age a certificate can be obtained by anyone who makes a request.

A Vitals Application must be completed and photo identification provided in order to obtain any vital certificate.  There is a $5.00 fee for each certificate requested.  We accept cash, money order, or card payments.

If requesting a certificate by mail, the applicant must send a completed Certificate Application, a copy of their photo identification, and the required fee.  We process all requests in the order they are received. Only payable by money order made out to Cabell County Clerk.

In the case that a certificate is needed immediately, the applicant must provide a pre-paid return envelope from the carrier of their choice.
